France: About ten people injured by gunshots and knives this weekend in Marseille

Over the weekend, close to ten people suffered gunshot wounds in two of Marseille’s migrant rich northern districts.

On Saturday night, two men aged 19 and 21 were wounded in the city of La Bricarde, in the 15th arrondissement, close to a known drug trafficking point. The two were allegedly shot in the legs by two motorcycle shooters, reports Le Parisien.

On the same night, in the 14th district, emergency services were called to an alleged apartment fire where they discovered to men who had been injured by gunshots and two others who had suffered stab wounds

On Sunday, a 22-year-old man was seriously injured by gunshots in Rosiers, in the 14th arrondissement. Shortly after, at around 18:45, just 500 meters from the other shooting, five men aged 23 to 39 were affected by “small arms fire”, reports Actu17.

But the violence did not end there. Later on Sunday, in Les Rosiers, another 22-year-old man was shot and wounded. He was later transferred to North Hospital with life-threatening injuries. So far, the reason for the shooting is not yet known.

Following the extreme violence which ensued over the weekend, former Mayor of the15th and 16th arrondissements of Marseille and the current Socialist senator for the city, Samia Ghali, called for the “immediate holding of an interdepartmental security committee for Marseille, accompanied by a clear and coordinated plan at the highest level of the state, to finally free the inhabitants from this permanent state of being hostages”.

Ghali has previously stated that the French Army should sent to the neighborhoods of Northern Marseille to put an end to the drug-trafficking and violence.
