The driver of former President Trump’s car on Jan. 6 disputed bombshell testimony that he tried to take control of the car, even as the witness affirmed the former president’s insistence in joining his supporters at the Capitol.
The detail, released as part of a broader report from House Republicans that minimizes Trump’s role in the destruction that day, takes aim at star witness Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony before the now-disbanded Jan. 6 committee.
Hutchinson told the public she heard Trump had “lunged” for the steering wheel following his speech near the White House in an apparent effort to veer toward the Capitol, a story that was relayed to her by others.
The unnamed driver reportedly testified, “[President Trump] never grabbed the steering wheel. I didn’t see him, you know, lunge to try to get into the front seat at all.”
In the summer of 2022, Hutchinson had made claims based on what she said had been told to her by Tony Ornato, a former Secret Service agent who served as Trump’s deputy chief of staff at the time.
Bobby Engel, the head of Trump’s security detail, was reportedly also in the car with Trump on January 6.
Hutchinson had testified: “The president reached up towards the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel. Mr. Engel grabbed his arm, said, ‘Sir you need to take your hand off the steering wheel, we’re going back to the West Wing, we’re not going to the Capitol.’ Mr. Trump then used his free hand to lunge towards Bobby Engel.”
“I’m the effing president, take me up to the Capitol now,” Hutchinson claimed Trump had said, when Engel told him it was not safe to drive to the Capitol.
Months after Hutchinson’s bombshell testimony, the January 6 Committee interviewed the driver of the car. However, the full transcript of the driver’s testimony was not included in the January 6 Committee report.
The New York Times, who managed to obtain a obtain a copy of the transcript, shared the following from the driver’s testimony:
“The president was insistent on going to the Capitol,” recounted the driver, whose name was not disclosed. “It was clear to me he wanted to go to the Capitol. He was not screaming at Mr. Engel. He was not screaming at me. Certainly his voice was raised, but it did not seem to me that he was irate — certainly not, certainly didn’t seem as irritated or agitated as he had on the way to the Ellipse.”
But, the driver said, Mr. Trump never lunged for the steering wheel or physically accosted the agents, contradicting one of the most sensational and hotly disputed elements of testimony given to the House Jan. 6 committee by a White House aide. The transcript of the driver is the first extensive eyewitness account of what happened in the armored vehicle to be made public.
“I did not see him reach,” the Secret Service driver told investigators for the House panel. “He never grabbed the steering wheel. I didn’t see him, you know, lunge to try to get into the front seat at all. You know, what stood out was the irritation in his voice, more than his physical presence.”
And here’s the excuse used as to why the driver’s remarks were withheld from the report:
The transcript was never released publicly by the House Jan. 6 committee, which entered into an agreement with the Secret Service regarding 12 interviews to avoid disclosing “privacy information, for-official-use-only information, intelligence and law enforcement sensitive records and raw intelligence information.”
The driver did confirm that Trump wanted to go to the Capitol, although at that time they were unaware what was actually taking place there.
The driver reportedly testified, “I don’t remember exactly what prompted it or how that portion of the conversation kind of grew organically, but he [Trump] was pushing pretty hard to go. The thing that sticks out most was he kept asking why we couldn’t go, why we couldn’t go, and that he wasn’t concerned about the people that were there or referenced them being Trump people or Trump supporters.”
