Ted Cruz warned President Trump
that if he goes all in for support of the Manchin-Toomey background check bill,
the results might be disastrous of him in the 2020 general election. In
particular, he warns, “President Elizabeth Warren.”
The Hill reports that Cruz is
warning that if conservatives aren’t motivated at the end of 2019, a liberal
Democrat like Warren has a much better chance of winning.
Cruz said, “We’re
going to see record-shattering Democratic turnout. The only element missing to
ensure Democratic victory is demoralizing conservatives, so they stay home. I
hope we don’t do that. I think that would be a serious mistake.”
The Senator’s warning comes in
response to speculation Trump may strike a compromise deal with Sens. Joe
Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) that would significantly expand
background check requirements.
Not only would it be a mistake to
trust any ranking Democrat on a deal as important as any gun control
laws, but Cruz said the bill itself is flawed.
“It would also be a serious mistake
as a policy matter. The Democrats’ proposal would not have prevented any of
these mass murders. We ought to be focusing seriously, substantively on how you
stop these horrific crimes and what they’re proposing wouldn’t do it,” Cruz
Cruz was quick to add that he isn’t
opposed to strengthening the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
He is co-sponsoring such a bill with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) that would
“increase federal prosecution of gun violence and criminalize the straw
purchasing of firearms and gun trafficking.” That, according to Cruz, “has a
far greater likelihood of preventing these kinds of crimes.”
While the Republican senators are
open to striking a deal on strengthening background checks, both warn against a
proposal along the lines of the 2013 Manchin-Toomey amendment.
The gun-control position leading
Democrats have taken in 2019 emphasizes why all conservatives would do well to
heed Cruz’ warning. Trump recently told reporters the GOP and Democrat “are getting
close to” cutting a deal on background checks but as Susan Ferrechio of the
Washington Examiner reports:
Decades of partisan fighting
over gun control in Congress, coupled with the elevated political stakes in a
looming election year, it is more likely headed for the legislative graveyard.
The reason for Ferrechio’s
pessimism is the deep differences in what either party is willing to accept and
the Toomey-Manchin bill does not bridge that gap. Now, eight years after the
bill was first introduced, House Democrats say the background checks called for
in Toomey-Manchin don’t go far enough.
Toomey- Manchin called for
background checks for gun shows and internet sales. A new bill backed by House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, H.R.8, goes
further by banning private sales from nonlicensed dealers.
H.R.8 passed the House but with
little support from Republicans. The measure passed 240-190 on Feb. 27 with
only eight from the GOP side voting for it.
“Background checks are the base
from which we must do everything,” Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer
(N.Y.) said Monday. “In our view, it’s paramount to pass the House bill as part
of any gun safety package because it would sew up the most egregious loopholes
that allow criminals, the adjudicated mentally ill [and] spousal abusers to get
But cut away all the rhetoric and
the reality, Democrats have no intention of stopping there. Cruz believes that
dramatically expanding background checks will ultimately require a national gun
registry. He said, “If you mandate every private person-to-person sale has to
be subject to a background check, the immediate next question is how do you
implement it and the only way to implement that is with a federal gun
That is likely Democrats real aim
with gun confiscation beyond that. Who would have thought a presidential
candidate from one of the most pro-gun states in the Union, Beto O’Rourke,
would dare say in a nationally televised debate, “Hell, yes, we’re going to
take your AR-15!”
Cruz said, “the approach that I’m
pushing, focus on the felons, the fugitives, those with dangerous mental
illnesses, that would prevent far more of these mass murders while at the same
time protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.”
That, Mr. President, is what your
supporters elected you to support. In a time when the push to do “something,
anything” about gun violence has risen to a fever pitch, please stay the
course, and they will be all-in for you.
