British anti-fraud investigator says he was “fired for being white and probing crimes by Asians”

A British anti-fraud investigator claims that he was fired by London’s Tower Hamlets council because he’s white and the subjects of his recent investigation were ‘Asians’.

Mark Edmunds, 55, is now seeking damages of £529,000 for racial and sexual discrimination against the London’s Tower Hamlets council – an organization long-plagued by scandals and allegations of corruption, the Daily Mail reports.

Edmunds had originally joined the council back in January of 2010, and was a member of the unit in charge of the hosting the London Olympics before he transferred to an anti-fraud investigations unit.

Lutfur Rahman, Britain’s first Muslim to be elected mayor, gained control of Tower Hamlets in 2010 but quickly ousted by a court for fixing his 2014 re-election.

Following a BBC investigation which raised major concerns about fraud occurring in the borough, Mark Edmunds was assigned to review youth service, The Times reports.

Edmund’s review discovered that Rahman had used youth grants to bribe voters. As a result of Edmund’s investigations, 12 senior Asian workers were dismissed from their positions.

Following the review and the dismissal of the senior workers, Edmund claims that he was followed, harassed, and threatened by three Asian men in a car that was driven by one of the workers who had been dismissed because of his findings.

Edmund also claims that following the stocking and harassment, he was demoted from his investigatory role by two female managers, before he was completely removed from his £63,000-a-year job in 2018.

Edmund asserts that his dismissal directly resulted from him being “a white man investigating a service predominantly staffed by Bangladeshi workers where the allegations of corruption were predominantly against Bangladeshi workers.”

In a witness statement, Edmund said: “The threats and intimidation were very real and serious given the history of many of those I was investigating (ie ex-gang members and drug dealers). Additionally, while conducting investigations I was regularly accused of being a racist and a bully, when all I was doing was my job, in an attempt to intimidate me and derail the investigation process.”

Apparently, in an email seen by the Times, a union official states that it would be discriminatory for Edmunds as a “white male” to receive a senior role rather than ethnic minority workers with more experience. Edmunds cites this as proof of discrimination against him.

The Council for Tower Hamlets says that it doubts the accuracy of his claims as well as his interpretation of events.
