Sources have informed The New York Post that John Barnett, the Boeing whistleblower, “didn’t seem depressed” during dinner on the evening before he was discovered dead in his car from an alleged suicide.
Employees at the Holiday Inn, where Barnett was found, disclosed that Barnett appeared to be in good spirits as he was eating a quesadilla, drinking a Coke, and scrolling on his phone.
“I didn’t think of him at all until I heard the news the next day. He didn’t seem upset at all,” an employee told The Post.
Barnett, 62, was discovered with a “self-inflicted” gunshot wound in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was engaged in depositions for a important lawsuit concerning the production of the 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
Lawyers, family friends and witnesses all say the whistleblower was upbeat about finishing off giving testimony against his former employer, The Daily Mail reports.
Bob Emery, a family friend who spoke with Barnett approximately two weeks before his alleged suicide, told The Post “he seemed too focused on what he was doing” with the lawsuit.
Emphasizing the suspicious nature of Barnett taking his own life, Emery said Barnett “had a good life going for him. Even with the problems at Boeing,” and he “didn’t seem depressed.”
Notably, Barnett was scheduled to provide a third day of closed-door testimony in his high-profile lawsuit against the aviation giant the following morning but never appeared.
Barnett’s distressed attorneys urged the hotel to check on him after the no show and after he failed to answer his phone. Police found his body on March 9.
Barnett’s family released a statement saying the 62-year-old cherished his work at Boeing until 2010 when he was relocated to the company’s 787 plant in Charleston.
“Things greatly changed for him when he learned that upper management was pressuring the quality inspectors and managers to cut corners and to not follow processes and procedures which they were required by law to follow,” the family said.
In 2019, Barnett spoke to the BBC, alleging that workers were intentionally fitting sub-standard parts, and he discovered issues with emergency oxygen systems that could compromise their functionality in emergencies.
Barnett claimed that the assembly process was rushed, an accusation Boeing vehemently denied.
