As the iconic British rockers The Who famously sang, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” and Speaker Mike Johnson is proving that he’s just a more sober version of Nancy Pelosi with a set of testicles.
Now having fully shed his skin as just another swamp-dwelling snake, the Louisiana Republican has teed up the long-awaited approval of tens of billions of dollars in free U.S. taxpayer money for Ukraine, but that’s not even the worst of his chicanery.
The speaker’s sneaky trick of trying to protect his position as Chuck Schumer’s toady by moving to change the motion to vacate rule that’s the only thing keeping him from going full native has at least, for now, been walked back, with Johnson saying that he lacks the votes but that there are GOP members who are urging him to find a way to neutralize lawmakers like Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) who’s fighting like hell against Zelenzky’s belated Christmas gift.
“Since the beginning of the 118th Congress, the House rule allowing a Motion to Vacate from a single member has harmed this office and our House majority,” Johnson wrote on X on Thursday afternoon. “Recently, many members have encouraged me to endorse a new rule to raise this threshold. While I understand the importance of that idea, any rule change requires a majority of the full House, which we do not have. We will continue to govern under the existing rules.”

While Johnson gives off the appearance of backing down, he’s already shown that he’s slicker than a barrel of eels, and don’t be surprised if a provision is stuffed into the foreign aid bills that a tired House of Representatives will be staying for the weekend to vote on when the final product comes to the floor sometime on Saturday night, the later the better.
The speaker’s announcement came shortly after Greene called him out for going behind his own party’s back to work with Joe Biden’s Democrats to remove the threat to his leadership.
“Mike Johnson is working behind the scenes with Democrats to save his speakership. He owes our entire conference a meeting explaining his plans to change the rules WITH DEMOCRAT HELP on Motion to Vacate,” the congresswoman wrote on X, sharing her remarks to reporters on Capitol Hill. “I filed a Motion to Vacate because Johnson has became the Democrat Speaker of the House. And with his actions, he’s proving to everyone I was right.”

“He’s serving Ukraine first and America last, and that would be the worst thing to do,” Greene also said. “I can’t think of a worse betrayal ever to happen in United States history. And here’s what’s really ironic: the constitutional attorney, Mike Johnson, is literally betraying the American people in order to keep his grip of power on the Speakership.”
