President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign is kicking off
a new initiative, “Women for Trump,” that it hopes will give the Republican a
leg up when it comes to courting women voters in 2020.
Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, is expected to help
launch the effort in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia.
Suburban women in particular will be a crucial voting bloc
in the upcoming presidential race. Per
Reuters, it was largely suburban
women that helped Democrats retake the House in 2018, a trend the Trump
campaign hopes to reverse next year.
The Trump campaign says it hopes to make a compelling
argument to women voters by touting the strong economy.
“Women for Trump” organizers are expected to tout the president’s handling of the economy, noting the unemployment rate among women recently reached its lowest point since 1953 and that 57% of the 5.6 million jobs added since Trump has become president have gone to women.
“That kind of success has produced grassroots support for President Trump, and women are a key component of that support,” campaign spokeswoman Sarah Matthews said in an email.
The Trump campaign’s decision to launch this effort in
Philadelphia is indicative of how important the state of Pennsylvania will be
to Trump’s re-election strategy. Trump narrowly won the state in 2016, and most
political pundits say they believe Trump must repeat that performance in 2020
to get re-elected.
