President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on the Democratic
congresswomen known as “the squad” prompted outcry from Democrats and several Republicans
to condemn the remarks.
But Trump may have gotten exactly
what he wanted when he singled out Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY),
Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA): a foil.
Trump’s strategy here is essentially the belief that
attacking these Democratic women benefits him:
In essence, Mr. Trump’s larger campaign strategy is to paint the Democratic Party with a broad brush and play up conditions that were favorable to him in 2016. This reflects GOP polling that shows Rep. Ocasio-Cortez as the new party bogeyman.
And polling backs up this hypothesis. GOP pollster Neil
Newhouse said his findings indicate that 74 percent of voters know enough about
Ocasio-Cortez to have an opinion about her, and 64 percent of Republicans hold
a negative view of the New Yorker.
Perhaps most interestingly, Newhouse also said that focus
groups routinely identify Ocasio-Cortez as the “ideological leader of the
Democratic Party,” and they view Pelosi as the “establishment politician.”
“Trump wants to make this into a choice between the way
things are going in the country right now — a strong economy, avoiding foreign
involvement, etc. — and running against a socialist Democrat,” Newhouse
