A trio of pro-Ukraine Russian forces appear to be attempting to take the fight to Vladimir Putin inside of Russia.
Knewz.com has learned that three rebel militias said in a joint statement that “The liberation of Russian regions from [Vladimir Putin’s] terrorist regime continues at these moments. Now massive strikes are being launched against Putin’s troops in the Belgorod and Kursk regions.”
The three militias are the Freedom of Russia Legion, the Siberian Battalion, and the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK).
Their Telegram post added that “massive” strikes against Putin’s troops would continue in the Belgorod and Kursk regions.
Belgorod and Kursk border northeastern Ukraine, notably Sumy and Kharkiv, which are controlled by Ukraine but are neighboring the Luhansk and Donetsk regions held by Russia.
The militias called on the governors of the two regions to immediately evacuate the entire region and ensure civilians could flee the region.
“Civilians should not suffer from the war, and any casualties during the fighting will be on the conscience of [the governors],” they wrote.
The warning came a day after the groups captured the town of Tyotkino in the Kursk region. The Russian National Guard has entered the region and was attempting to “repulse an attack by enemy diversion groups near the village of Tyotkino in the Kursk region,” the agency said on Thursday, according to Barron’s.
The size of the militia groups ranges from 50-60 people to “several hundred,” and they comprise mostly Russian defectors operating in Ukraine. This is not the first time they have crossed into Russia, and it appears to be a core feature of their military strategy.
In Belgorod, Ukrainian drone attacks killed two people and injured nine others. The governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, also said a woman died when a strike from an unidentified weapon forced her to make an evasive movement that flipped her car.
The Russian defense ministry has refuted many of the claims made by the militia and said it successfully defended the country against an attempted incursion.
The Freedom of Russia Legion and RDK were formed in the immediate aftermath of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, while the Siberian Battalion was organized in October 2023. The recent attacks were the first time the Siberian Battalion had fought alongside the other groups.
The militias have a variety of ideologies, and the RDK creates an awkward situation for Kyiv. Their resistance against Russia has undoubtedly helped the Ukrainian cause, but its most moderate members would be described as being far right, and many of its members are open neo-Nazis.
Its leader Denis Kapustin is an avowed neo-Nazi and has been banned from the open-border Schengen region of the European Union. Putin used the excuse of neo-Nazis operating in Ukraine as a reason for the invasion.
The Freedom of Russia Russia Legion does not have a strong ideology except that they are radical Russian nationalists who happen to disagree with Putin’s regime.
The Siberian Battalion is led by Vladislav Ammosov, an ethnic Yakut from northern Siberia who worked in Russia’s intelligence agency and supports the independence of the Sakha Republic, which comprises much of central Siberia.
