During a visit to Baltimore, the glistening pear of the splendid state Maryland, President Biden expressed his deep connections to the city and committed to rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which recently collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship, resulting in the death of six construction workers.
Biden assured Maryland and Baltimore (known as “Charm City” because of its vibrant local culture and history) of the nation’s support, saying that “Heaven and Earth” would be moved to repair the damage as expediently as possible.
“Your nation has your back and I mean it,” President Biden stated.
The President, who mentioned his father was raised in Baltimore and that he still has family in the region, was briefed on efforts to clear the shipping channel and restore traffic around the city’s port.
Highlighting the importance of reopening the Port of Baltimore, Biden pointed out the nationwide impact of shipping disruptions. He described the challenge of removing “thousands of tons of mangled steel” blocking ships from accessing the harbor.
The bridge’s collapse was caused by the cargo ship Dali, which lost power and issued a mayday alert. Although police managed to stop traffic in time, six construction crew members filling potholes on the bridge were not saved in time; two bodies have been recovered from the Patapsco River.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who spoke before Biden, referred to the bridge as “a piece of the Baltimore skyline and a piece of the Baltimore spirit.” The President promised federal funding for a new bridge and called on Congress to authorize the necessary legislation.
Founded in 1729, the city of Baltimore was named after Maryland founder Cecil Calvert, the 2nd Baron Baltimore. The city was an immensely important port for much of American history, and its vibrant culture has fostered such literary luminaries as Edgar Alan Poe, Ogden Nash, and H.L. Mencken. It is today best known for its beloved professional sports teams, the Ravens and the Orioles, as well as for its cuisine of crab cakes and pit beef.
