A coalition of Democratic super PACs are teaming up in an
attempt to take down President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign, according to
a new report from Politico.
Concerned that Trump is running virtually unopposed while
Democrats bludgeon one another in a crowded and increasingly contentious
primary, these groups claim they intend to spend $150 million on a “yearlong” campaign
designed to counter Trump’s efforts:
Democratic super PACs are set to soon launch a yearlong $150 million advertising onslaught countering the millions the president’s campaign has already spent targeting voters. On top of that, billionaire Tom Steyer is funding other groups testing a range of strategies to register and turn out people to vote. And the Democratic National Committee this week began training hundreds of college students to work as field staff in battleground states, an effort that will continue throughout the campaign.
While the Politico story does not break down the spending,
it does note that Priorities USA, typically the prime driver of Democrat outside
group television ads during presidential cycles, is expected to soon launch a
digital ad campaign targeting voters in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and
Florida. Trump won all four states in 2016, and Democrats believe these states
hold the best opportunity to win back the White House in 2020. That digital
campaign is part of a larger $100 million effort from the group.
Meanwhile, Democrat opposition research firm American Bridge
“plans to begin $50 million in spending that will target voters in those same
states with a media campaign that will include television, digital and radio
advertising.” In previous cycles, American Bridge did not mount paid media
campaigns, making this a first for the group.
On the grassroots front, billionaire megadonor Tom Steyer’s “For
Our Future” PAC says it expects to spend $80 million in 2020. That group will “gather
information on which issues matter most to voters.” His other group, NextGen
America, will focus on college campuses and plans to spend $9 million in 2019.
