Caveat: I believe that no child should go hungry, we are individually and collectively responsible to ensure such is the case. That being said, governments cannot claim to be fighting poverty and food “insecurity” when they are, by policy and actions, making food more expensive.
I read the Epoch Times article, titled, “Trudeau Announces $1B National School Food Program 2 Weeks Ahead of Budget”, by Jennifer Cowan, dated 4/1/2024, and was struck with a number of observations.
1. The federal government is once again inserting itself into provincial jurisdiction through the power of the federal purse;
2. Instead of poverty decreasing in “wealthy” Canada, it appears it is on the rise—how could that be, if the economy is properly managed;
3. It appears Trudeau and Cabal are incapable of connecting the dots; you increase taxes on input factors for growing food, distribution and sale to the population— you make food more expensive.
How difficult is it to see the following:
A. Farmer Joe tills his soil with a tractor using carbon fuels—farmer Joe pays carbon tax on such fuels;
B. Farmer Joe plants his seed with machinery that uses carbon fuels—farmer Joe pays carbon tax on such fuels;
C. Farmer Joe waters his crops with machinery that uses carbon fuels—farmer Joe pays carbon tax on such fuels;
D. Farmer Joe sprays his crops with machinery that uses carbon fuels—farmer Joe pays carbon tax on such fuels;
E. Farmer Joe harvests and stores his crops with machinery that uses carbon fuels—farmer Joe pays carbon tax on such fuels;
F. Farmer Joe transports his crop, to the buyer, with machinery that uses carbon fuels—farmer Joe pays carbon tax on such fuels;
G. The buyer transports his crop, to the processor, with machinery that uses carbon fuels—the buyer pays carbon tax on such fuels;
H. The processor processes the crop with machinery that uses carbon fuels—the processor pays carbon tax on such fuels;
I. The processor sells the processed crop to the wholesaler, the processor uses carbon fuels to transport the processed products to the wholesaler and pays carbon tax on such fuels;
J. The wholesaler stores the products in warehouses that use carbon fuels to generate the needed electricity to keep the products in proper condition. The wholesaler pays carbon tax on such fuels (albeit it may be indirectly);
K. The wholesaler transports the product to the grocery chain with machinery that uses carbon fuels—the wholesaler pays carbon tax on such fuels;
L. The grocery chain stores the products in warehouses and stores that use carbon fuels to generate the needed electricity to keep the products in proper condition. The grocer pays carbon tax on such fuels (albeit it may be indirectly);
M. Jack and Mary go to the grocery store, in their vehicle, to purchase and transport such groceries home. Jack and Mary pay carbon tax on such fuels used to transport them to and from home;
N. Jack and Mary store the products in their refrigerator that use carbon fuels to generate the needed electricity to keep the products in proper condition. Jack and Mary pay carbon tax on such fuels (albeit it may be indirectly);
O. Jack and Mary cook the products in their gas-powered stove. Jack and Mary pay carbon tax on such fuel;
P. Jack and Mary throw the waste from their products into the garbage bin that is then picked up by a garbage truck that uses carbon fuel. The garbage truck “owner” pays carbon tax on such fuel;
Q. The dump uses machinery that uses carbon fuels, the dump owner pays carbon tax on such fuels.
Note: Every step along the food chain, for all intents and purposes, the carbon tax is compounded.
However, in the world of Justin Trudeau and Cabal the carbon tax really doesn’t affect food prices. Only an amoeba would reach such a conclusion.
4. Even more telling and ironic is that the $1,000,000,000 (billion) being supplied by the Feds.(for lunches) are borrowed monies that will be paid by the very children that are being “helped”. In essence, no matter how you cut this “gem” of financial bait and switch— the kids are paying for their lunches!!!
So, we can conclude, with great confidence, that the detested carbon tax is adding tremendous cost along the entire food chain and the family grocery bill is certainly being negatively impacted by these regressive taxes.
Quotes from the article, “Mr. Trudeau said the upcoming budget—which will be tabled in the House of Commons April 16—is “about fairness for every generation.”
“We’re stepping up as a government not because it’s the nice thing to do, but because it allows us to be more successful as an economy,” he said.”
Again, one must be tone deaf and devoid of rational thought to make these bovine excrement pronouncements. There is no fairness for all generations when we knowingly saddle young kids with trillions of dollars in debt repayment— debt in which these children had absolutely no say.
For a Prime Minister to suggest the government is stepping up (more appropriately stepping into it) not because it’s the nice thing to do, but because it makes for a more successful economy is absurdity at its zenith.
Quote, “The government projected a deficit of $38.4 billion for 2024–25 in its fall economic statement. The national debt currently stands at around $1.2 trillion, with yearly finance costs ballooning in recent years due to higher interest rates.”
Might I suggest that the provincial and crown corporation debt is certainly in the federal debt range. That is, we are saddling these “lunch children” with at least 2.4 trillion dollars in debt not to mention the hundreds of billions in future interests payments.
Yes, mis amigos, future generations will call us, justifiably so, the Pickpocket Generation as we have certainly picked our children’s pockets without, it appears, the slightest twinge of concluding “that just isn’t right.”
Maybe this statement is, indeed, correct, “How dare you continue to stand up and look away while saying that you’re doing enough, when the responsible managing of the children’s future is, obviously, your last priority thought. You say children are the most important resource, yet you enthusically abuse and saddle us with your massive debts and insincere platitudes.”
