Hundreds of Asylum Seekers Released in California, Border Patrol Overloaded

The following article, Hundreds of Asylum Seekers Released in California, Border Patrol Overloaded, was first published on Big League Politics.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) this week released hundreds of asylum seekers onto the streets of San Bernardino, Calif., as the law enforcement agency no longer has the capacity to hold them

“For several days now, U.S. Customs and Border Protection vans filled with Central American alien families have been driving from the El Centro Border Patrol Station in Imperial to a Greyhound bus station at West 6th and North G streets in San Bernardino,” according to CBS2.

The El Centro Border Patrol sector simply cannot handle the influx of asylum claims, about half of which are ultimately denied. Meanwhile, there is a backlog of nearly one million asylum cases waiting to be heard in immigration courts nationwide.

CBP reportedly said in a statement:

“Due to capacity limitations at many U.S. Border Patrol stations on the southern border, and the limited capacity of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to accept transfer of family units, on March 19, CBP began releasing non-criminal, processed family units.  To date, CBP has released more than 40,000 family unit aliens on a Notice to Appear (NTA) / Own Recognizance (OR).

As non-governmental organizations have reached their capacities, CPB has released family units at transportation hubs during daylight hours when the weather does not endanger those released.”

As unvetted foreigners are released into American communities, gridlock persists in Washington, D.C. on the subject of border security.

Big League Politics reported:

President Donald J. Trump has declared a national state of emergency, for which several heavily-blue states immediately sued his administration. Democrats refuse to budge on the issue, unwilling to secure America’s borders. As illegal border crossings surge, they blocked a meaningful amount of wall funding in the 2019 federal budget.

In what many conservatives see as a colossal failure, the Republican Congress, led by former Speaker Paul Ryan, current Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, failed to deliver wall funding to the president’s desk during all of 2017 and 2018, when Republicans held the House, the Senate, and the White House.
