Texas lawmakers in the state’s House of Representatives just passed a bill that would bar the government from discriminating against businesses like Chick-fil-A that donate to organizations that oppose homosexual “marriage” and other viewpoints leftists hate.
Christian Headlines reported that the bill passed by a vote of 79-62. If it passes the Senate and ends up on Governor Greg Abbott’s desk, it will become law.
“What we want to make sure is if you donate to the Salvation Army, you won’t be labeled as a bigoted,” said GOP Rep. Matt Krause, the bill’s sponsor, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Democratic Rep. Mary Gonzalez, an openly LGBT member, urged her colleagues to oppose the bill.
“We can’t discriminate against one in order to protect the other,” Gonzalez said. “The scariest part of this bill … is the individuals who will take this bill and use your vote for this bill to perpetuate hate.”
The traditional group Texas Values supported the bill. The organization also set up a website, SaveChickFilA.com, encouraging its supporters to contact House and Senate members about the bill.
The San Antonio City Council voted in March to bar Chick-fil-A from San Antonio International Airport over donations and the Christian-owned restaurant owner’s religious view of marriage, which is the union of only one man and one woman.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton opened an investigation to determine whether the council violated the U.S. Constitution.
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority in Buffalo also barred Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the airport. But support came from an unexpected place.
A spokesperson for the New York affiliate of the ACLU said: “Government actors cannot officially silence speech or take punitive actions based on a person’s or private entity’s political viewpoints.”
