The campaign to defund police is now just seeing the implications of their call. Amid a $22 million budget slash, Baltimore is now facing a major police shortage concern.
Local Fox News in Baltimore, Maryland, reported that three police officers had to patrol one of the city’s districts, which has 61,000 residents.
Neighborhood Scout reported that “city-wide calls begging police to take on overtime positions were sent out as the officer shortage escalated.”
With the lack of police authorities around, crimes continue to surge in the city, as it is reported to have one of the highest crime rates in the US.
Authorities are overworked and overstretched; with this, most of them are unable to answer calls, including reports of child assault.
Amid the city-wide police shortage, one child was abused and found with “bruises all over his body.” Several people were also missing.
Sergeant Betsy Branter Smith, a spokeswoman for the National Police Association, hits on the continuing vilification campaign against the police, thus resulting in a police shortage that is happening all over the country.
“The reason that nine out of every ten police departments in this country are short-staffed is because, we have been dealing with—here in the United States—this three-and-a-half, almost four-year vilification and demonization of the American law enforcement officer,” Smith remarked.
Earlier, the Pittsburgh police announced that there wouldn’t be any active police officers throughout the city from 3 am until 7 am.
According to Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Chief Larry Scirotto, their goal is to reduce the crime reports they receive from 200,000 to just 50,000.
“That allows our officers to be engaged in the community in a way, now they’re at the YMCA instead of sitting on the 10th Street bypass with a bike complaint,” Scirotto added.
The Pittsburgh police also replaced desk officers with a Telephone Reporting Unit.
This transition, according to the police chief, will promote officer wellness. The Bureau will shift from eight-hour workdays to four 10-hour shifts each week.
In Ridgely, Maryland, the governing commission suspended, with pay, the entire Ridgely Police Department amid an ongoing probe by the Office of State Prosecutor.
According to the Associated Press, the decision to disband the police department was not adequately communicated to the community, leaving residents feeling disregarded and demanding transparency from their officials.
While government officials failed to disclose the nature of the suspension, many speculate that this was related to the death of George Floyd and the campaigns of the Black Lives Matter movement.
