The U.S. Military Academy at West Point has slightly revised its mission statement, omitting Douglas MacArthur’s, “Duty, Honor, and Country.”
Now, in place of those three important words is “Army Values.”
People didn’t mince words about their disappointment with the change, with some social media users calling the new language nefarious while accusing West Point of going “woke” and “full globalist.”
“We know what duty, honor, and country mean, but army values can mean anything and change with the wind,” Franklin Graham posted on X. “This is just another attempt by socialistic Democrats to weaken our military institutions.”
“West Point is going woke,” wrote Jeff Kuhner, host of The Kuhner Report. “We’re watching the slow death of our country. Gen. MacArthur is rolling in his grave.”
Others have defended the change, like Becky Sullivan at NPR, who claimed it set off “a firestorm” on conservative social media while dubbing the backlash “hubbub.”
“This is a complete non-issue,” said Ret. Brig. Gen. Ty Seidule, a professor at West Point. “I can’t imagine why anybody would be upset about it.”
“It’s a reflection of how silly our politics are and what a lightning rod the military is in those silly politics,” said a graduate of the academy to NPR. “If people can claim a piece of it in these culture wars, then it’s seen as an advantage or a benefit.”
Spokesperson Col. Terence Kelley noted that this update marks the tenth change to the academy’s mission statement. However, “Duty, Honor, Country” has been the motto of the academy since 1898, per the AP.
Kelley emphasized that Army Values are clearly defined in other documents, and includes loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage.
The academy’s updated mission reads: “To build, educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets to be commissioned leaders of character committed to the Army Values and ready for a lifetime of service to the Army and Nation.”
