Kirsters Baish| Authorities revealed on Thursday that three individuals have been taken into custody and charged with the murder of a pregnant Chicago teenager. Reports say the 19-year-old was strangled to death, then her baby was cut from her womb.
Fox News reports:
Clarisa Figueroa, 46, and her 24-year-old daughter Desiree face first-degree murder charges in the death of 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, who had gone to the women’s home in response to a Facebook offer of free baby clothes, Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said at a press conference.
The older woman’s boyfriend, 40-year-old Piotr Bobak is charged with concealing a death by homicide, police said.
Desiree Figueroa, who pretended Ochoa-Lopez’s baby was hers, admitted to helping her mom strangle the woman with a coaxial cable, police said.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi reported that the newborn was not expected to survive.
The body of Ochoa-Lopez was found behind the house early on Wednesday morning. At the time her body was found, had been missing for three weeks. Fox News reports that “she was last seen leaving her high school on April 23. That same day, paramedics were called to the Figueroas’ home several miles away on the Southwest Side about a newborn with problems breathing.”
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt stated that a 46-year-old woman dialed 911 to ask for help, saying that her newborn baby was experiencing breathing problems and appeared to be in distress. When paramedics arrived “the baby wasn’t breathing, the baby was blue,” Merritt explained. On the way to the hospital, paramedics desperately tried to revive the baby.
Ochoa-Lopez’s family explained that the young married mom of a 3-year-old son was going to the home of a woman who claimed on Facebook that she had baby clothes and a stroller.
“She was giving clothes away, supposedly under the pretense that her daughters had been given clothes and they had all these extra boy clothes,” explained the family’s spokeswoman, Cecelia Garcia.
Fox News explains that police reached a break in the murder investigation “after the woman who said she had given birth to the baby set up an online fundraising campaign, another spokeswoman for Ochoa-Lopez’s family said. The GoFundMe campaign said that the baby was about to die and money was needed for a funeral.”
Walker explained that police conducted DNA tests, which determined that Ochoa-Lopez and her husband, Yiovanni Lopez, were actually the parents of the newborn baby.
Lopez spoke to reporters, explaining that he understood that his son would not likely survive, but he would not give up hope.
“We plead to God that he gives us our child because that is a blessing that my wife left for us,” he stated in Spanish through an interpreter.
