Military Training Accidents -Four in 2019, Two in Less than a Week

Military Training accidents have proven deadly — there were four vehicle rollovers that killed four military members since January. Two of them occurred in just the last week. The latest one killed Staff Sgt Jacob Hess when his humvee rolled over in an incident with several other vehicles.

Staff Sgt Hess, 34, was assigned to the 97th Civil Affairs Battalion, 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Special Operations) (Airborne) out of Fort Polk. The rollover crash occurred at 3 a.m. during a training exercise. Twelve others were injured in the incident.

“Hess’ awards included four Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals. He was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.” Military.com

These are the three previous accidents involving military vehicle rollovers during training:

Octavious Deshon Lakes Jr, 22

In January, Army Specialist Octavious Deshon Lakes Jr was killed when his M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle rolled over. He was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas.

“Lakes’ awards and decorations include two Army Achievement Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.” Military.com

MARSOC Marines
Staff Sergeant Joshua Braica

In April, Marine SSgt Joshua Braica was killed when his vehicle rolled over. Two others were injured, as we previously reported.

1st Lt Hugh McDowell

On May 9, Marine 1st Lt Hugh McDowell died when a light armored vehicle that contained six other Marines overturned during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton. The six Marines were injured in the accident.

“McDowell earned his Marine Corps commission in May 2017. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.” Military.com

All of these incidents are under investigation by the various branches.
