Singer Pink, 39, appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and made it clear she is fed up with social media mom-shaming. Because of the nastiness of people online, she has decided to stop sharing her intimate family moments online. She will no longer post photos of her daughter Willow Sage, 7, and son Jameson Moon, 2, on Instagram.
Critics last month slammed the legendary singer for sharing a photo of her kids interacting with a pelican, one that was snapped after Jameson had taken off his wet swim diaper. It was innocent and Pink thought nothing of it. They live on a farm and a baby going without a diaper is a common occurrence. She even scribbled out her boy’s nude bottom half on the picture. Nevertheless, online trolls descended on her for it. She won the battle of words but decided enough was enough when it came to her kids and family.
“People went as far as saying someone should call child services because he didn’t have a diaper on and how dare I … some of the nastiest things,” Pink recalled on Ellen. “I cried so hard after that because I like to share my family. It’s my proudest moment. I’m prouder of my kids than anything I’ve done in my whole life.”
“I just won’t share them anymore,” she said. “I won’t do it. I’m not posting pictures of them anymore.”
Pink thought nothing of the pic. It never crossed her mind that it was inappropriate because it wasn’t.
“I looked at it like, there was a pelican that flew into our room. It spent two hours with us … it was this incredible experience for my family,” Pink said. “And I have a 2-year-old [who] doesn’t like to wear wet swim diapers and at some point, he took it off. I don’t think like that! We’re a family. We live on a farm. My kids are naked, it’s what happens!”
“She also clarified that she’s not against constructive criticism. “I understand people saying, ‘You need to be more careful because you are in the public eye and you should of thought of that.’ And they’re right. But there’s a nicer way to say that,” she told DeGeneres.
“There’s a kind way to be online. And I’m open to kindness,” Pink said. “Someone else taught me that the word ‘gypsy’ is derogatory and I’m not a person who uses derogatory language. I wrote back to them, ‘Thank you so much for being so kind and educating me. I’m editing it, I’m taking it down, and that word will never come out of my mouth again.’ There’s a way to do things!”
“Ultimately, Pink admitted to DeGeneres that the decision to stop sharing photos of her kids on social media was coming at “a good time,” especially for Willow.
“She’s 7 now,” Pink said. “It’s probably time to pull her back from the world and let her live her best life.”
“Both Pink and her husband Carey Hart, 43, frequently share photos of their kids to social media. Pink especially was well-versed in clapping back at haters.
“Sometimes I feel like I can change their minds,” she confessed to DeGeneres on Friday’s show. “I’m all about injustice. I don’t like injustice. I don’t like how brave people are anonymously. Rude, just mean … mean-spirited. So I go in. If I have time, I go in.”
“Pink previously opened up to PEOPLE about her parenting style in April 2018’s Beautiful Issue.
“The thing about parenting is you never know if anything you’re doing is working,” she said. “That’s been the most humbling thing for me. In my head, I sound amazing and then I turn around and her eyes are completely glazed over. I have no idea. We’ll see.”
“I believe in affection,” Pink said of her parenting style. “I believe in needs being met and faith being implemented, and I believe in letting your kids know they can count on you, and that you’ll be there. My parents obviously did not believe in that and I worked out okay. I always tell Willow, ‘I’m going to teach you the rules so that you’ll know how and when to break them.’”
I can certainly understand Pink’s anger here and that is why I don’t put personal pics on social media period. I never have.
“There’s something seriously wrong with a lot of you out there. Going off about my baby’s penis? About circumcision??? Are you for real? As any normal mom at the beach, I didn’t even notice he took off his swim diaper,” Pink wrote. “I deleted it because you’re all f—ing disgusting. And now I’m turning off my comments and shaking my head at the state of social media and keyboard warriors.”
Pink concluded: “And the negativity that you bring to other people’s lives. There is something seriously wrong with a lot of you out there. Smfh. Here’s a picture of the pelican we obviously caught and abused for hours before dangling baby penis in its face.”
Pink nailed it here. It’s sad it has to be this way but if you really value your privacy and your family, just keep your personal life off social media. I admire Pink for doing this – it shows what a great mom and wife she is.
