Speaking on Saturday, Democrat Senator Chris Coons admitted that special counsel Robert Mueller’s recently-submitted report into the allegations of Russian meddling during the 2016 election could be a “good day” for President Trump.
“Once we get the principal conclusions of the report, I think it’s entirely possible that it will be a good day for the president and his core supporters,” said Coons, urging Democrat lawmakers to “be cautious” in jumping to conclusions.
“It’s possible that Mueller concluded there was no evidence to justify any legal action against the president,” said Coons.
Coons went on to speculate that Mueller “could have concluded that there was nothing there that was strong enough to challenge” a decades-old Justice Department policy regarding the indictment of a sitting president.
When asked whether he would accept the results of the report, should it clear President Trump of allegations of wrongdoing, Coons replied, “Yes. I’ve said all along that whatever he reaches in terms of a conclusion, I will accept.”
