President Joe Biden’s main problem when it comes to Latino voters is his brand, according to a poll released on Tuesday, even as Latino voters support Democratic stances on most subjects.
Biden has seen his advantage over former President Donald Trump regarding Latino voters shrink from 29% in 2021 to 9% in 2024, according to the Axios-Ipsos poll. Outside of the presidential election, Latino voters are more in favor of Democrats than they are of Republicans.
“In almost every case, Trump performs better than the Republican brand and Biden performs worse than the Democratic brand,” Chris Jackson, Ipsos pollster and senior vice president, told Axios.
The concerns primarily stem from heightened crime rates and inflation, contributing to Trump’s 11-point lead in tackling crime and a 22-point lead in handling the economy. Despite this, Democrats are narrowing the gaps on economic and crime-related issues, although Biden’s approval may not fully reflect these shifts.
Latino voters continue to support Democrats on issues like abortion and immigration, although opinions vary on immigration policies. While many favor offering a pathway to U.S. citizenship for undocumented individuals, a majority also prioritize enhancing border security. About 52% of respondents expressed worry about potential mass deportations targeting all Latinos rather than only those residing unlawfully in the country.
AXIOS: “Biden’s advantage over Trump among all Latinos has fallen from 29 points after Biden’s first year in office to just 9 points.”
