MSNBC’s Hans Nichols reported Tuesday that a constituent in Rep. Ron Kind’s (D-WI) district plans on challenging the 12-term congressman because of his opposition to the Green New Deal. It’s the latest sign that the 2020 elections will be pivotal for the direction of the divided Democratic Party.
“I don’t know if it’s too early to start talking about primary challenges, but we’ve heard from a local doctor here in Wisconsin-Three,” Nichols said, referring to Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District. “Dr. Mark Newman, a former pediatrician, he told me he’s planning on challenging Ron Kind from the left on [the] issues of Medicare and the Green New Deal.”
Nichols reported earlier that Kind would not endorse the Green New Deal at an event in La Crosse despite being pressed several times on the matter.
The Cook Political Report has Kind’s district listed as a “likely Democrat” seat in 2020, but it’s unclear how that would change if Democrats nominated a far-left candidate.
