Former Vice President Joe Biden is expected to announce a 2020 run for president any day now. In a new development, some people are suggesting that Biden may make his announcement with a running mate already chosen.

The Hill reports:

Biden weighing an early announcement of running mate: report

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who is expected to soon launch a bid for the presidency, is reportedly considering selecting a running mate early in his campaign.

Citing Democrats familiar with Biden’s plans, CNN reported the possibility on Monday. An aide told the network that naming a running mate early would help Biden keep the focus on the Democratic goal of defeating President Trump in the general election.

Biden has discussed the possibility in conversations with advisers as well as with top Democrats and elected officials, according to CNN.

CNN noted that Biden stirred speculation last week by meeting with former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams (D). But the two did not formally discuss the vice presidency during that meeting, two people familiar with the meeting told CNN.

There’s a very good reason why people are speculating that Biden’s chosen running mate will be Stacey Abrams. The two had a quiet meeting in Washington, DC at the end of last week.

The Washington Examiner reported:

2020 powwow? Joe Biden and Stacey Abrams meet in Washington

Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams met in Washington, D.C. Thursday.

The two are both potential 2020 presidential contenders, with Biden expected to announce a run soon and Abrams still undecided.

The meeting, reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, came after mixed signals from Abrams. She said Monday she wasn’t going to run but a day later reversed course, saying a 2020 bid was “definitely on the table.”

Abrams, 45, who was the Democratic minority leader in the Georgia House, lost a 2018 run for governor against Republican Brian Kemp. She is a rising figure in Democratic politics and gave her party’s response to President Trump’s 2019 State of the Union.

If Biden, 76, a white male who has spent nearly 50 years in Washington, were to win the Democratic nomination then Abrams would be a natural vice-presidential pick to “balance” the party ticket.

What this basically means is that Biden knows he won’t make it far as an older white man in today’s Democratic party.

He needs a woman of color to check more identity politics boxes.
