South Carolina Republican senator Tim Scott is launching a new effort to recruit black voters for Donald Trump as speculation swirls over Scott’s ambitions to be vice president.
Scott was joined by Reps. Burgess Owens (Ut.), John James (Mi.), Wesley Hunt (Tx.) on the first episode a of a new video series, America’s Starting Five.
They discussed some of Biden’s notorious racially insensitive gaffes, like his infamous comment that black people who do not support Biden “aint’ black.”
Tim Scott makes his move
Byron Donalds (Fl.) is said to be part of the series but was not in the first episode.
“It’s sometimes frustrating as well as entertaining,” Scott said of Biden’s flip comments. “Frustrating in that Democrats and Joe Biden get away with saying the darnedest things and never held accountable by anyone for the things they say so salaciously.”
“Entertaining because that is funny. I mean, seriously that’s the thing that you can’t be Black? An old white dude telling me I can’t be Black if I don’t vote for him?”
Biden’s comment that “poor kids are just as bright and talented as white kids” also came under scrutiny.
“The arrogance of these white liberals condescending not just African Americans, but poor kids in general,” James said.
Trump casts a wide net
Scott has campaigned vigorously for Trump, who has publicly praised Scott since he ended his short-lived presidential bid.
“A lot of people are talking about that gentleman right over there,” Trump said during a Fox News town hall in February, referring to Scott.
The conventional thinking about Scott is that he could help Trump with minority voters, who have traditionally backed Democrats, although there are signs of a rightward shift since 2020.
It could be some time before Trump reveals his VP choice, but the former host of The Apprentice has teased the country with a wide list of contenders.
Some are political newcomers, like businessman and vocal Trump defender Vivek Ramaswamy, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance and Alabama senator Katie Britt. Others, like Scott, are more experienced and closely allied with the GOP in Washington.
Some of the other top names include South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, Arkansas governor and former Trump press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, No. 3 House Republican Elise Stefanik, former HUD secretary Ben Carson, and even former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard.
