President Biden’s chosen nominee for the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals is in danger of failing to garner enough votes to be confirmed in the Senate after concerns rose over his affiliations with groups tied to criminal and alleged antisemitic figures.
Adeel Mangi is a partner at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP and received his master of laws degree from Harvard Law School in 2000. The nomination would be a first for Biden. Mangi would be the only Muslim to serve on a federal appeals court if confirmed.
However, Senate Republicans and Democrats have expressed concern over the nominee in recent days, putting his confirmation at risk. With a roughly evenly divided Senate, Mangi likely needs the support of every Democrat in the body, as well as all three independents.
Opposition to Mangi’s nomination is growing from both sides of the aisle. The Washington Examiner explained that Mangi “currently helps advise the anti-police group Alliance of Families for Justice and who previously was affiliated with a Rutgers Law School center that hosted a 2021 event featuring a convicted Palestinian terrorist fundraiser.”
According to Politico, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) announced on Tuesday, “I cannot support this nominee.”
“My concern is with respect to the organization that supports individuals who kill police officers,” Masto added.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) defended Mani, saying,
“He’s an excellent nominee. I know a lot of the other information that’s been generated on the other side is distorted and unfair. So, he’s not without controversy, but I think he’s an extraordinary individual.”
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) announced last week:
Democrats know that Adeel Mangi’s nomination to the Third Circuit is hanging on by a thread. Why? He served on the advisory board of the radically antisemitic Rutgers Center for Security, Race, and Rights, whose director issued a statement where she said “We are in awe of the Palestinian struggle to resist violent occupation, removal, and erasure and the expansion of Israeli settler-colonialism.
Mangi is also opposed by police groups, including several from his home state, because he sat on the advisory board of an organization that referred to cop-killers as “freedom fighters.”
Democrats were ready to put him on the federal bench for LIFE.

In another post last week, Cruz explained, “Joe Biden’s nominee for a federal appellate court, Adeel Mangi, was a board member of a group that advocated for cop-killers. Cop-killers should never be released into society. It’s a no-brainer. He is so far left that even some Democrats are opposing his nomination.”

“Adeel Mangi was an advisory board member to a group that honored cop-killers as “elder freedom fighters.” His nomination is being strongly opposed by police organizations across the country for a reason. This alone should be utterly disqualifying,” Cruz added.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has also warned about Mangi’s radical connections.
Watch @LeaderMcConnell expose Biden judicial nominee Adeel Mangi and explain why he must be rejected by the Senate:
“Mr. Mangi’s nomination is in a quicksand of radicalism. The more the Biden Administration struggles to save it, the more radicalism pulls it down.” pic.twitter.com/WsugK7rJb9

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania state Rep. Tarik Khan (D), who is Muslim, slammed the opposition to Mangi as “Islamophobia.”
Islamophobia has no place in the judicial selection process.
Proud to stand with other local elected officials urging the U.S. Senate to move forward with Adeel Mangi’s historic judicial nomination.
