A New York Judge made a massive decision on April 12 in Donald Trump’s imminent hush money trial:
Jury selection will begin on April 15.
Donald Trump and his team had hoped to delay the trial on the grounds of “prejudicial” pretrial media coverage, but Judge Juan Merchan apparently did not agree.
Merchan decided that Trump’s trial will go forward, beginning on April 12 with the jury selection process.
Trump’s team had been arguing that the one-sided coverage of America’s lamestream media coverage was going to make it impossible to select a fair and balanced jury.
“No fair and impartial jury can be selected in this County at any time in the near future, including in April of this year. Therefore, the Court should adjourn the trial date until the prejudicial media coverage subsides,” Trump’s side had argued.
The judge did not agree.
“Defendant appears to take the position that his situation and this case are unique and that the pre-trial publicity will never subside. However, this view does not align with reality,” Merchan wrote in his ruling.
The decision marks the fourth time during the course of just a single week that a judge has rejected Donald Trump’s attempt for a last-minute delay of jury selection.
The start of the jury selection process would mean that Donald Trump is officially a defendant in a criminal trial, something that doesn’t usually happen to the country’s president.
“Defendant simply cannot have it both ways: complaining about the prejudicial effect of pretrial publicity, while seeking to pollute the jury pool himself by making baseless and inflammatory accusations about this trial, specific witnesses, individual prosecutors, and the Court itself,” prosecutors wrote in court papers.
Did the judge agree with them because it was what made sense, or did the judge agree with them because that opinion was what would hurt Trump the most?
