White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders wasn’t thrilled with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her decision to throw the Secret Service under the bus in her statement canceling the president’s State of the Union address.
Pelosi sent President Donald Trump a letter explaining that she rescinded the invitation to speak at the Capitol because of the partial government shutdown. Pelosi noted that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Secret Service were both “hamstrung” by the shutdown.
Today, I wrote to @realDonaldTrump recommending that we delay the State of the Union until after government re-opens, as the @SecretService, the lead federal agency for #SOTU security, faces its 26th day without funding. https://t.co/K2oL8WGvqo pic.twitter.com/g3fIlxDbbK

But as IJR previously reported, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen denied that the Secret Service would have a problem securing the event, noting that they were “fully prepared” to secure the event.
The Department of Homeland Security and the US Secret Service are fully prepared to support and secure the State of the Union. We thank the Service for their mission focus and dedication and for all they do each day to secure our homeland.

In response to this confusing stunt by Pelosi, Sanders called the speakers actions “shameful.” She explained her frustration with Pelosi during an interview with Jessie Watters on Fox News.
“Any of these mainstream media folks praising the so-called power move by Nancy Pelosi, there’s nothing powerful about the Speaker of the House questioning the ability of the United States Secret Service who have said they have no problem protecting the president. Let’s be real clear: The Secret Service protected the president when he was in Iraq. I’m pretty sure they can handle the job on Capitol Hill. I think, frankly, it’s shameful and unbecoming of the speaker to pull the action that she did in regards to questioning the United States Secret Service.”
In response to Pelosi’s action on the State of the Union, President Trump pulled the rug out from under the speaker by letting her know via letter that her trip overseas had been canceled, as IJR previously reported.
This negotiation via petty letters hasn’t moved the dial on the shutdown. Sanders claimed that Democrats are the ones dodging real negotiations.
“They refuse to sit down at the table and have the conversation with the president,” said Sanders. “Nancy Pelosi is too busy taking vacations in Hawaii. Her team is going to Puerto Rico doing cocktail parties and Broadway shows. They need to be sitting down with the president.
