The turmoil surrounding MSNBC’s hiring of former Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel appears to have come to a conclusion.
McDaniel is out, Knewz.com has learned.
NBC News, the network’s parent company, is dropping McDaniel as a contributor following an on-air revolt from several MSNBC personalities, according to Puck News founding partner and senior correspondent Dylan Byers.
“SCOOP @PuckNews: NBC NEWS plans to drop ex Republican National Committee-chair Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor following on-air revolt from NBC/MSNBC talent. Execs are deliberating over details; announcement pending. Meanwhile, McDaniel is seeking legal representation,” Byers wrote on X Tuesday, March 26 with a link to the publication’s newsletter.
The expected separation — an official announcement had not been made on Tuesday, March 26 — comes after MSNBC prime-time headliner Rachel Maddow and the co-hosts of Morning Joe criticized the decision to bring McDaniel on as part of its political coverage heading into the 2024 presidential election.
Maddow, perhaps the biggest star on the network, shared her disgust with the hiring on Monday’s show.
“To me, that is inexplicable,” Maddow, a harsh critic of former President Donald Trump said, according to Newsweek. “I mean you wouldn’t … you wouldn’t hire a made man, like a mobster, to work at a [district attorney’s] office, right? You wouldn’t hire a pickpocket to work as a TSA screener.”
“And so I find the decision to put her on the payroll inexplicable, and I hope they will reverse their decision,” she added.
McDaniel, who along with Trump has suggested that the 2020 presidential election was rigged, fell out of favor with the former president and was replaced by his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as leader of the Republican National Committee.
According to The Hill, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, co-hots of Morning Joe, also criticized the decision to bring McDaniel on as a paid contributor.
“To be clear, we believe NBC News should seek out conservative Republican voices to provide balance in their election coverage. But it should be conservative Republicans, not a person who used her position of power to be an anti-democracy election denier,” Brzezinski said.
“And we hope NBC will reconsider its decision. It goes without saying that she will not be a guest on Morning Joe in her capacity as a paid contributor,” Brzezinski added.
Chuck Todd, meanwhile, the former host of Meet the Press, also shared his displeasure with NBC’s hiring of McDaniel while appearing on the Sunday morning show.
“There’s a reason why there are a lot of journalists at NBC News uncomfortable with this, because many of our professional dealings with the Republican National Committee over the last six years have been met with gaslighting, have been met with character assassination,” he said.
McDaniel made her first appearance on the network on Meet the Press.
