Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore shows that “migrants go out and do risky jobs at midnight” and as a result they “do not deserve to be treated as they are by certain insensitive, irresponsible politicians in the United States.”
López Obrador made the remark as Maryland State Police identified one of the two bodies removed from the Patapsco River on Wednesday as 35-year-old Alejandro Hernández Fuentes, originally from Mexico.
“Based upon the conditions, we’re now moving from a recovery mode to a salvage operation because of the superstructure surrounding what we believe are the vehicles and the amount of concrete and debris; divers are no longer able to safely navigate or operate around that in the areas around this wreckage,” Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent of Maryland State Police, said during a press conference Wednesday night.
The other man whose body was recovered has been identified as Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, from Guatemala.
The two men were found in a red pickup truck, which was about 25 feet deep in the water.
Four other construction workers are also presumed dead and have not yet been recovered. According to multiple reports, they have been identified as:
- Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 38, from Honduras
- Miguel Luna, 49, from El Salvador
- Two others, from Mexico and Guatemala
A co-worker of the men said he was told the workers were all on break and sitting in their vehicles parked on the bridge when the ship hit the bridge, causing it to collapse into the water below.
Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-TX) slammed Obrador, writing on social media, “President Obrador uses tragedies that happen in America to further his own political agenda and deflect from himself. From blaming families for their kids dying from trafficked fentanyl to turning the Baltimore bridge collapse into a statement about illegal immigration. The truth is, he just doesn’t care to help stop the crisis at our Southern border and will do anything to draw attention away from it.”

Obrador also recently brazenly declared that the “flow of migrants will continue” and suggested he might be willing to stop it if the United States would shell out $2 billion per year in aid to Latin American countries, among other demands.
