Spain has a growth rate rising above 3% and unemployment is dropping after 10 months of having no government.
The country has had two general elections where no party has won a sufficient number of seats to be able to piece together a government.
The absence of the necessary parliamentary majority has meant that no one has been able to do anything….for 10 months now!
We are continually told that every country must have an activist government. No economy nor society can be allowed to just bumble along by itself, the firm smack of political control is necessary for the world to continue to turn on its axis.
This is not really what the empirical evidence tells us of course. Spain has not really had a government for the past 10 months and yet it is expected to be one of the fastest-growing eurozone economies this year. And as a result the unemployment rate has just fallen to 18.9%. So much for the necessity of activist management of the economy then:
Spain’s unemployment rate has dropped to 18.9 percent in the third quarter from 20 percent in the previous three-month period. The lowest rate in six years. Welcome news for acting premier Mariano Rajoy as he looks to begin a second term in office this week.
The National Statistics Institute said Thursday the number of people out of work fell by 253,900 July through September to a rounded total of 4.3 million.
That’s a rather better economic performance than the country had when they did have an activist government:
Spain’s central bank expects the country to expand by 3.2% this year. Among the most robust growth rates in Europe, which has created more jobs.
Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is expected to be elected by Parliament this weekend for a second term after 10 months of political deadlock, has said that getting more Spaniards back to work is one of his policy priorities.
So what about our federal government shutdown? We are in a much better position than Spain! We have 50 state governments and our founders intended for them to take care of the bulk anyway! Has President Trump suckered Democrats into a trap that will enable a radical downsizing of the federal bureaucracy?
I hope so! I hope that this shutdown last for months and the American people see just exactly how unimportant it is!
And there is a bonus to this shutdown and we are almost to it! Trump has an ability to severely downsize government.
In only five more days of the shutdown, a threshold will be reached. It will enable permanent layoffs of bureaucrats furloughed 30 days or more.
Will the President take advantage of this and relieve our bloated federal government of many unnecessary workers?
This seems to be what was referenced in this remarkable essay written by an “unidentified senior Trump official” published in the Daily Caller, which vouches for the authenticity of the author and explains that it is protecting him from adverse career consequences should the name become known.
I strongly recommend reading the whole thing. It is very well possible that this could be President Donald Trumps signature achievement. That the Democrats enabled him to do it would be icing on the cake!
