An illegal migrant from El Salvador who has been twice deported from the U.S. was this week charged with more than 20 counts of sex abuse and sex offenses of minors during his time working as a church teacher in Maryland.
Ervin Jeovany Alfaro Lopez, 33, was arrested on Monday by the Montgomery County Department of Police on charges including sex abuse of a minor.
The incidents allegedly took place between 2016 and 2018 at a Derwood church located in the 15700 block of Crabbs Branch Way in Montgomery County. The victims were aged between 6 and 12 at the time, according to the case in Montgomery County Circuit court. He has also been charged with rape in the second-degree and two counts of sex offense third degree in relation to the incidents.
The sexual abuse allegations first came to light in May of last year when a victim came forward. Then, three more victims came forward in September and January, to say they were abused by Alfaro Lopez at the same church.
He was between 25–27 years old at the time of the assaults of the four young girls. The victims said he would touch them both over and under their clothing when students were praying with their eyes closed.
According to a report by Fox 5 DC, one of the victims was the daughter of the church pastor.
Fox 5 DC shared the following details:
Alfaro Lopez is a citizen of El Salvador. He was first arrested by U.S. Border Patrol near Lake Charles, Louisiana, on March 23, 2015 after having unlawfully entered the U.S. He was issued a notice to appear before a federal judge and was released on bond on April 1, 2015. He was ordered to report to a Department of Justice immigration judge in Baltimore and was subsequently removed from the U.S. on Sep. 26, 2018.
Alfaro-Lopez was re-arrested in the U.S. on Jan. 23, 2019. He was granted a voluntary departure from the U.S. within 60 days of April 16, 2019 and left the U.S. on April 30, 2019.
On March 9, 2020, Alfaro-Lopez was caught by Border Patrol in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas after he came back into the country illegally. USBP processed him for expedited removal and he was deported on March 24, 2020.
However, Alfaro-Lopez then snuck back into the United States a THIRD time, managing to completely evade Border Patrol, so the location or date when he entered is unknown.
Montgomery County police arrested him on Aug. 9, 2023 and charged him with rape second-degree, and two counts of sex offense third degree. The same day, ICE filed a detainer against him, but the Montgomery County Detention Center refused to honor the order turned him loose on August 11, 2023.
After more victims came forward in September, additional charges were added.
Finally, Alfaro-Lopez was once again arrested this week, on Monday, March 11. He is now being held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Center.
WUSA9 reported:
The charging documents also state that Alfaro Lopez admitted to the church’s pastor that he had touched a girl inappropriately, and that it was, “dealt with internally.”
