President Donald Trump announced on Sunday he would review the case of a former Green Beret who was recently charged with murder after admitting to killing a suspected Taliban bomb maker back in 2016.
“At the request of many, I will be reviewing the case of a ‘U.S. Military hero,’ Major Matt Golsteyn, who is charged with murder,” the president tweeted. “He could face the death penalty from our own government after he admitted to killing a Terrorist bomb maker while overseas.”

On Thursday, Army Maj. Matthew Golsteyn was charged with killing a man he suspected to be a Taliban bombmaker behind the deaths of some U.S. Marines the day before. The charge comes long after he admitted to the murder in a Fox News interview in 2016.
“Major Matthew Golsteyn’s immediate commander has determined that sufficient evidence exists to warrant the preferral of charges against him,” Lt. Col. Loren Bymer, a spokesman for U.S. Army Special Operations Command, said. “Major Golsteyn has been charged with the murder of an Afghan male during his 2010 deployment to Afghanistan.”

President Trump’s announcement followed an appearance by Golsteyn’s lawyer on “Fox & Friends,” during which he spoke on the former Green Beret’s behalf and insisting the U.S. Army already knew everything that came out of the interview back in 2011.

Calling his client one of the “finest” and most “humble” men he knows, he went on to challenge the Army’s claim that new evidence has been uncovered, asking, “What new evidence could there possibly be?”
According to the lawyer, the government became aware of the incident back when Golsteyn was interviewing for a job with the CIA and disclosed it during a polygraph test. He was reprimanded in 2014 for his actions, but no formal charges were filed against him until last week.
