EXCLUSIVE: Organization calls for more Muslims to run for Congress

Two Muslim women were elected to U.S. Congress last month, and the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) is calling for more American Muslims to become engaged in government, media and communities, and run for public office.

Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib won Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, making her the first Palestinian-American woman to be elected to Congress. She has announced she will be wearing a traditional Palestinian dress when she is sworn in to Congress.

Democrat Ilhan Omar, a refugee in Minnesota, became the first Somali-American member of Congress last month.

Saturday, Tlaib re-tweeted a post originally shared by MPAC, of a recruitment video, asking for donations so more Muslims can be sent to Congress.

The post reads, “Our Congressional Leadership Dev. Program trains students that aspire to be the next or . Some of our esteemed alums have since run campaigns for office. Want to send more to ? Give a gift of $50 today. .”

Later Saturday afternoon, MPAC posted another message on Twitter, sharing a report of an article by the Tennessean titled “Why Muslim women hope this year’s historic election helps curb the discrimination they face.”

MPAC again referenced Tlaib and Omar, writing, “New Congresswomen @RashidaTlaib & @IlhanMN have left many hopeful for a future with less discrimination.”
