Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) doesn’t seem to think special counsel Robert Mueller found his smoking gun in the details that emerged recently about Michael Cohen.
Cohen was President Donald Trump’s attorney during the campaign. He was eventually arrested as part of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Cohen took a plea deal related to payments made to Stormy Daniels but was recently found to have lied before Congress about his knowledge surrounding an effort to get a Trump Hotel in Moscow.
Some have claimed this was an effort to cover up a connection between the Trump Organization and Russia. If that were true, it could validate that President Trump had colluded with the Russians prior to the 2016 election.
However, Sen. Paul doesn’t see the situation as proving anything about President Trump. He pushed back on NBC’s Chuck Todd after the host asked about Cohen’s lies to Congress.

Todd: Let me ask you though about the allegation that Michael Cohen had circulated his false testimony to Congress in advance so people in and around the president, perhaps his lawyers, perhaps him, knew in advance that Michael Cohen was going to lie to Congress.
Paul: About what issue?
Todd: About the issue of Trump Tower in Moscow. Is that troubling enough to you? How does that sit with you?
Paul: I guess I don’t quite understand it because I don’t know what’s illegal about trying to build a hotel in Russia. So, this is pretty common. I see no problem with someone running for president trying to build a hotel somewhere. Now, if you were asking and saying, ‘I will give you something in exchange for letting us build a hotel, that would be wrong, but I haven’t heard any evidence of that. Just trying to build a hotel somewhere, I can’t image how that would be criminal.
Paul certainly seems to be demanding that a crime is committed before he is willing to pursue action against the president.
