Donald Trump Jr. is lobbying his father to select a running mate who can take a punch — and hit back even harder, he told The Post.
“What I want in that role is I want a fighter,” Trump Jr. said. “I understand what they are going to throw at us.
“In 2016 you needed someone to balance out [the ticket] — that’s where Mike Pence made sense, sort of the yin and yang, but [given] the vicious nature of the swamp and the insanity we see on a daily basis, you need someone who can take those hits,” said Trump Jr., 46, the oldest of the former president’s five children.
Now, Trump Jr. said he’s been suggesting people like Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), former GOP presidential contender Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson as potential running mates for his father.
If his father wins the 2024 presidential election, Trump Jr. said he intends to take a “very active” role in the transition team, while his fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle would continue to focus on fundraising.
“Mostly just to make sure we stop some of the D.C. swamp rats and the swamp creatures from getting in there and doing their thing,” he told the New York Post.
He also suggested that former national intelligence director John Ratcliffe, and Cliff Sims, a former special assistant to President Trump, may also help with the transition team.
However, Trump Jr. said he had no plans to work in the West Wing, as his sister Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner did during Trump’s first term.
Bloomberg alleged in a report last week that Trump has ruled out Ramaswamy as a running mate, but is considering him for a Cabinet position – potentially DHS Secretary.
Some Trump allies see Ramaswamy as ideal for the job because they say he excels at public speaking and, as an Indian-American son of an immigrant, could neutralize criticism of sweeping immigration restrictions.
Bloomberg also alleged that Trump is considering former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for Chief of Staff, and is eyeing both Sen. Mike Lee and Sen. Ted Cruz as potential candidates for Attorney General.
