Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., revealed on Monday that he believes former President Donald Trump was right when he sounded the alarm on TikTok and its national security implications.
“It was rare for me to say that Donald Trump was right,” Warner said during a committee hearing on worldwide threats. “But Donald Trump was right years ago when he pointed out the enormous national security concerns around TikTok, both in terms of obtaining data, but also think about the percentage – I think there are about 170 million Americans who use TikTok.”
Warner further noted many young Americans even use the social media video app to receive news about current events. According to the senator, China’s potential to funnel propaganda through the app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, “is a huge national security issue.”
The report notes that Trump had signed an executive order in 2020 to effectively ban the TikTok app in the U.S., but the order was blocked by the courts.
Warner had also said during an interview in November 2022, “I think Donald Trump was right. TikTok is an enormous threat.”

From CBS News:
Sens. Mark Warner and Marco Rubio, who sit atop the Senate Intelligence Committee, warned Sunday of the threat posed by TikTok, a social media app owned by a China-based company that’s become widely popular among young people in the U.S.
“We might have slightly different ways on how we go at this, but we think this is a national security issue,” Warner, a Virginia Democrat, said of himself and Rubio on “Face the Nation.”
The video-sharing app has been under fire by U.S. officials for years amid warnings that China’s government could gain access to its data and use it to manipulate or spy on Americans. But a renewed push targeting TikTok has gained momentum on Capitol Hill in recent days, with a House bill that would compel the company to either sell the app or be banned from U.S. app stores.
Senate Intel leaders @MarkWarner and @marcorubio say TikTok is “a national security issue,” arguing the Chinese government’s access to American data is “what we need to confront.”
