Matthew 24:34
34 “Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.”
Biblical inspiration believers have struggled with this verse. Some believe end-time prophecy was fulfilled during the AD 70 conquest of Jerusalem. Others believe Jesus was mistaken. I think Scripture’s inspiration is astounding if we look at the query and Jesus’ partial answer.
Be aware that the disciples asked two questions. When will these things happen, and what will indicate your arrival (Matthew 24:3)? Jesus had recently mentioned temple destruction. That would happen before that generation died. Jesus’ prediction of those gorgeous stones being overturned came true 40 years later.
Jesus also mentioned “all these things”—including His return. Greek “generation” denotes “a period of time, or a generation of people, or a nation.” In Matthew 24:36, Jesus reminds the disciples that only the Father knows His return date. For the second part of the question, Jesus’ return, the generation might signify “the times of the Gentiles” (Luke 21:24). A theologian calls it “the church age.” The word “generation” might signify “the nation of the Jews.” After years in exile, the nation was restored. A single word answered both. The temple would be destroyed before that generation died, and Jesus’ return before the church age or the Jews’ hope of a nation ended. How incredible that God’s Word speaks on so many levels! Some look for mistakes, but believers see miracles in every word.
Consider: Jesus says His words will last in the next verse. Are you searching God’s Word for riches?
