At least three Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were killed Friday morning in a tragic explosion at the department’s Special Operations Bureau training facility in East Los Angeles, officials confirmed.
The blast occurred just after 7:30 a.m. local time at the Biscailuz Training Facility, situated in the parking lot of the Special Enforcement Bureau.
According to sources, the deputies were handling unexploded ordnance recovered from a recent bomb disposal call when the device detonated unexpectedly.
The identities of the deputies have not been released.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been briefed and is closely monitoring the situation, his office stated.
State emergency officials from the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) are coordinating with the sheriff’s department and have offered full state assistance, Fox News reports.
The Los Angeles Fire Department’s (LAFD) arson investigators and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are actively assisting local authorities in the ongoing investigation.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi called the incident “horrific” and confirmed that federal agents have been deployed to support the probe.
The Department of Homeland Security, the Los Angeles Police Department and the ATF are all collaborating with local officials.
The area around the training facility was evacuated as a safety precaution while investigators work to determine the cause of the explosion, according to the BBC.
LAFD Captain Erik Scott expressed solidarity with the sheriff’s office, posting on social media, “We stand with our brothers and sisters of the @LASDHQ following the tragic loss of three deputies in a training facility explosion. Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by this blast.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass extended her condolences on X as well.
“The thoughts of all Angelenos are with all of those impacted by this blast,” she wrote.
Kathryn Barger, Chief of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, also released a statement.
“My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are with the brave men and women of the Sheriff’s Department during this difficult time,” she wrote, adding that she is “closely tracking the situation as we learn more about what occurred and the condition of those affected.”
Bomb squads regularly handle potential explosives throughout the region, but such work carries inherent dangers.
Reports from the Los Angeles Times and law enforcement sources note that recovered military ordnance, especially items dating back decades, can be highly unstable, per the BBC.
The age, condition and storage history of such explosives often remain unknown, increasing the risk during handling and disposal.
Even minor movement or environmental changes can trigger detonation, requiring bomb technicians to use extreme caution during removal.
This tragedy arrives amid heightened tensions in Los Angeles, where ongoing anti-ICE protests and riots have further strained law enforcement resources and community relations.
Details about additional injuries remain unclear as investigations continue into the explosion’s cause and circumstances.
The incident underscores the dangers faced daily by law enforcement officers, especially those involved in explosive ordnance disposal operations.
It marks a profound loss for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the broader community they serve.
