SAN ANTONIO, TX – A tragic incident unfolded on the southwest side of San Antonio early this morning, resulting in a deadly crash that claimed at least two lives and sent more than 20 individuals to the hospital. The collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of Cason Road and I-35, according to local authorities.
The chaos began when a stolen car collided with a small white minibus on a bridge over Leon Creek. Witnesses reported a scene of confusion and urgency as police, armed with long guns and accompanied by search dogs, scoured the nearby creek bed. A helicopter hovered low, aiding the search for suspects who fled the scene.
Authorities revealed that four individuals escaped the crash site, one reportedly armed with a rifle. This has turned the incident into a complex situation involving both a serious traffic accident and an ongoing police pursuit.
The collision also involved an 18-wheeler, which was found on the bridge with significant front-end damage. The exact role of the truck in the crash remains unclear, but it added to the already chaotic scene.
The minibus, carrying passengers ranging from children to senior citizens, bore the brunt of the crash. Initial reports indicated that five individuals suffered potentially life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders worked swiftly to transport more than 20 injured people to local hospitals.
Traffic in the area has become severely congested. The southbound lanes of the freeway are being redirected onto the access road, causing significant delays. Meanwhile, the northbound lanes are reduced to a single lane due to the presence of numerous emergency vehicles.
Motorists attempting to navigate the area face lengthy delays. The southbound access road is jam-packed, while the northbound access road remains closed as authorities continue their search for the armed suspects.
Efforts are underway to manage the traffic chaos, with officials turning around large trucks and 18-wheelers to ease the congestion. Chief McManus is expected to provide a briefing soon, although he has not yet been seen at the scene.
As the last ambulance departs with lights flashing, the hope is that the injured individuals receive the urgent medical care they need. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
