Attorney General Pam Bondi has reportedly dismissed Maurene Comey, a senior trial attorney from the Southern District of New York who was involved in the prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, according to Politico. Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, who had been relieved of his duties by President Donald Trump in 2017, had served nearly ten years at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The reason behind her removal has not been publicly clarified, and no official response was immediately issued by Comey herself regarding the development.
This dismissal surfaced during ongoing questions surrounding the Justice Department’s handling of the Epstein investigation, an issue that has sparked increased scrutiny. Speculation grew after James Comey appeared to post a cryptic image on social media that spelled out “86 47” using seashells, an image many interpreted as a veiled reference to violent political intent. The New York Times later reported that the Secret Service had investigated the matter, although Comey insisted the post was harmless.
Attorney General Bondi addressed reporters on Tuesday, affirming her commitment to continue in her role as long as it remains the president’s will. While critics have raised concerns about transparency within the DOJ regarding the Epstein case, Bondi made it clear that her focus remains on core law enforcement priorities.
Bondi stated that her presence would continue as long as desired by the president. The mission of her administration to reduce violent crime and address the opioid crisis, in coordination with FBI Director Kash Patel, was also reiterated.
Meanwhile, legal expert Alan Dershowitz, who had represented Epstein in past legal proceedings, offered clarity this week on persistent rumors about an alleged Epstein “client list.” During a NewsNation interview with Chris Cuomo, Dershowitz noted that such a list has never existed.
According to him, the redacted FBI affidavits often cited by the media originated from accusations made by individuals against unnamed figures, many of whom are no longer living or are no longer in public service. He emphasized that legal constraints issued by federal judges in Manhattan are the primary reason for withheld information.
Dershowitz reiterated that there was no client list. It was also clarified that the courts, not the Department of Justice, President Trump, or Attorney General Bondi, had decided to significantly redact the disputed documents. Dershowitz went on to say that the main reason the court orders are still in place is to safeguard the people the courts consider to be victims, which prevents more public revelations. He also reiterated that any lack of knowledge on the issue is not the fault of the Trump administration.
This episode marks another instance of friction between those demanding full public disclosure and a legal system bound by confidentiality and judicial authority, underscoring a broader narrative often used to target the current administration without foundation.
