New York City Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has pushed back against President Donald Trump‘s name-calling and allegations that he is a “pure communist” and “a 100% Communist Lunatic.” Knewz.com has learned that in a recent statement to the press, Mamdani has clarified his political position and what he stands for, along with his stance on immigration enforcement actions.
Mamdani Denies Trump’s Allegations of Being a Communist

In a statement to NBC’s Meet the Press, Mamdani denied President Trump’s allegations of being a communist, saying, “No, I am not… I have already had to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I’m from, who I am, ultimately because he wants to distract from what I’m fighting for. I’m fighting for the very working people that he ran a campaign to empower, that he has since then betrayed.”
Mamdani, according to reports, calls himself a democratic socialist.
Explaining his political stance, he said in a previous statement, “I call myself a Democrat socialist in many ways inspired by the words of Dr. King from decades ago, who said, ‘Call it democracy or call it democratic socialism. There has to be a better distribution of wealth for all of God’s children in this country.’”
Trump Threatens to Cut Off Federal Funding to New York if Mamdani ‘Doesn’t Do the Right Thing’

Apart from name-calling, President Trump also threatened to cut off federal funding to New York City if Mamdani “doesn’t do the right thing”—presumably regarding immigration enforcement.
In a statement ot Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Trump said, “Let’s say this: If [Mamdani] does get in, I’m going to be president, and he’s going to have to do the right thing, or they’re not getting any money. He’s got to do the right thing or they’re not getting any money.”
The leading NYC mayoral candidate, on the other hand, has said that if elected, he plans on keeping New York as a sanctuary city, limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. “We have to stand up and fight back… And we haven’t seen that from our current mayor, who has instead been working with the Trump administration to assist in their goal of building the single largest deportation force in American history,” he said in a statement.
Mamdani Faced Criticism from the Left As Well

It is worth noting that New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand criticized Mamdani in a lengthy rant and falsely accused him of calling for “global jihad.” What Mamdani did do was refuse to condemn the slogan “globalize the intifada,” which has become a rallying cry for anti-Israel protesters in the United States ever since Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks.
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries commented on this, saying, “Globalizing the intifada, by way of example, is not an acceptable phrasing. He’s going to have to clarify his position on that as he moves forward.”
According to reports, Mamdani recently referred to the controversial “Intifada” slogan as “a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights.” While he refused to condemn the phrase, Mamdani vowed to be the type of mayor who “protects Jewish New Yorkers” if elected in November.
Mamdani on ‘Globalize the Intifada’

Speaking with NBC’s Kristen Welker on Meet the Press, the NYC Mayoral candidate said, “That’s not language that I use. … The language that I use and the language that I will continue to use to lead this city is that which speaks clearly to my intent, which is an intent grounded in a belief in universal human rights.”
Welker repeatedly asked Mamdani during the interview whether he would condemn the “Intifada” slogan, and his answer has always been the same. However, he did acknowledge the growing antisemitism in the U.S. and the anti-Jewish and anti-Israel sentiment associated with the slogan.
After speaking with numerous Jewish New Yorkers about their fears of antisemitism, he is committed to increasing “anti-hate crime programming” in the city by 800%. “I’ve heard from many Jewish New Yorkers who have shared their concerns with me, especially in light of the horrific attacks that we saw in Washington, D.C. and in Boulder, Colorado, about this moment of antisemitism in our country and in our city. … And I’ve heard those fears, and I’ve had those conversations,” Mamdani told Welker.
