UNION, ME – A significant development has emerged in the case of Sunshine “Sonny” Stewart, a 48-year-old paddleboarder found dead at Crawford Pond on July 3. Authorities have arrested a 17-year-old suspect in connection with her murder.
Due to the suspect’s age, Maine State Police have withheld his identity. However, they have disclosed that Stewart’s cause of death was determined by the medical examiner in Augusta as strangulation and blunt force trauma. The young suspect was apprehended without incident and is currently held at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.
The arrest is the result of extensive investigative efforts by Maine State Police detectives. Stewart, who had been staying at the Micmac Campground, was eagerly anticipating a summer of paddleboarding before her untimely death.
While authorities have not revealed a motive for the murder, local residents express relief that a suspect is now in custody. “It’s reassuring to know someone has been arrested,” said one resident. “There were all sorts of rumors about a serial killer, and this brings some peace of mind.”
