Federal immigration raids across Alabama during the week have sparked concern and confusion among legal advocates and community leaders.
On Tuesday, July 15, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained dozens of people at several Mexican restaurants as part of what officials say is a years-long investigation into business ownership and operations.
But some are questioning whether all of those taken into custody actually did anything wrong.
Zaira Solano, a Birmingham-based immigration attorney and founder of the Solano Immigration Law Firm, said cases like this follow a familiar, and troubling, pattern.
According to Solano, people are often picked up by ICE despite not being accused of anything beyond being in the country without documentation. In many of those instances, she added, individuals are already in the process of applying for legal status.
Solano made clear she’s not suggesting that’s definitively what happened in Tuesday’s raids, but based on what she’s seen in similar cases, she believes it’s a very real possibility.
