Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) has called on House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) to get Ghislaine Maxwell to testify before Congress on the Jeffrey Epstein case. This comes as there has been fallout a DOJ memo that stated Epstein committed suicide and did not keep a “client list.”
Burchett wrote in a letter to Comer, “Thank you for your continued leadership on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Given the events of the past week, I respectfully request you invite Ms. Ghislaine Maxwell to testify in a public hearing before the Committee. Should Ms. Maxwell refuse the invitation, I encourage you to use subpoena powers. The American people have questions about the case involving Jeffrey Epstein. It is well beyond time those questions are answered.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Burchett wrote on X, “We need to hear Ghislaine Maxwell’s testimony. I’m working on a letter to Chairman Comer and GOP Oversight to remove any obstacles to her testifying.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) also spoke on the topic on Tuesday, when podcaster and commentator Benny Johnson asked the head lawmaker in Congress if he was in favor of subpoenaing the DOJ or getting testimony in Congress from Maxwell, Johnson replied, “I’m for transparency.”
“It’s a very delicate subject, but we should put everything out there and let the people decide,” Johnson added. After a review of the evidence in the case, the DOJ as well as the FBI have concluded that Epstein killed himself, and that there was “no credible evidence” that Epstein “blackmailed prominent individuals” or that there is more investigation that needs to be done concerning third parties.
Trump has called for some in the MAGA base to let go of the issue of Epstein, and has defended Attorney General Pam Bondi from backlash against her and the DOJ. Johnson addressed this too, and said, “Look, [former President Ronald Reagan] used to tell us we should trust the American people, and I believe in that principle. I know President Trump does as well, and I trust him.”
