Imagine a state agency handing a top role to someone with a serious criminal past — well, that’s exactly what’s happened under Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s watch.
The Minnesota Department of Education, overseen by the Democrat governor, hired and later promoted Wilson Tindi, a Kenyan national with a 2016 sexual assault conviction, to the prominent position of director of internal audit and advisory services in December 2023, as the Daily Caller reports.
Tindi’s troubling history stretches back years, beginning with immigration challenges as early as 2008 when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sought to deport him.
Uncovering troubling criminal history
By 2012, a woman accused Tindi of sexual assault in her home, though that case did not lead to prosecution.
Fast forward to 2014, when Tindi became a lawful permanent resident, yet faced another accusation of assault after admitting to inappropriately touching a sleeping woman in Hennepin County.
That incident led to a 2016 conviction for sexual assault, with a plea deal dropping a burglary charge and resulting in a two-year sentence stayed for five years.
Immigration struggles, state employment
Despite his criminal record triggering renewed deportation threats after 2014, Tindi appealed his immigration case and was released from detention in February 2018 due to concerns over prolonged holding without removal.
Interestingly, he doesn’t currently appear in ICE’s detention database, leaving questions about his status unanswered.
Meanwhile, Tindi secured his first state job in 2018, before Walz took office as governor in 2019, starting a career path within Minnesota’s government agencies.
Climbing the ranks despite controversy
Tindi worked various roles at the Minnesota Department of Education and the Pollution Control Agency, earning a hefty $58 per hour in fiscal year 2024 at the latter, per payroll data.
His ascent peaked in December 2023 with a promotion to Director of Internal Audit and Advisory Services at the Department of Education, a role where his now-deleted profile boasted oversight of risk management and compliance.
One has to wonder — how does someone with such a background climb to a position of trust over critical agency functions? It’s a head-scratcher that deserves more scrutiny.
Agency silence as profile removed
Curiously, after media outlet Alpha News sought comment, the Department of Education swiftly removed Tindi’s profile from its website, raising eyebrows about transparency.
Neither the department nor Tindi responded to requests for comment from other news sources like the Daily Caller News Foundation, leaving the public in the dark.
Turns out, actions — or in this case, inactions — have consequences, and dodging accountability only fuels skepticism about how decisions are made under Gov. Walz’s administration.
