Despite former President Joe Biden’s departure from office, it appears that not everyone who worked in his administration is necessarily out of the woods with the Trump Department of Justice.
When asked by reporters on Tuesday, President Donald Trump stated that he would “take a look” at the possibility of arresting former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, as Newsmax reported.
This is in response to the actions taken by Mayorkas during the Biden years, when almost 10 million people entered the United States illegally.
The Trump administration has taken a firm stance on immigration, and said that Biden’s policies were a main reason why.
Questions emerge
When engaging with Trump, Blaze Media’s Julio Rosas preemptively called Mayorkas’ handling of the U.S. border “disastrous” and then asked for the president’s take.
“Why hasn’t [Mayorkas] been arrested yet?” Rosas asked. “Obviously, you guys are cleaning out the mess that was made deliberately the past four years, and people want accountability.”
Rosas went on, “It’s great to see the border is secured, and it’s great to see the state-level cooperation, but I want to ask you why hasn’t he been held accountable, or anybody?”
Trump then asked whether Mayorkas was given a pardon by Biden, to which the reporter responded, “I don’t believe so.”
Trump’s path forward
“Well, I’ll take a look at that one because what he did is beyond incompetence. Now, with that being said, he took orders from other people. And you could say he was very loyal to them. It must have been very hard for him to stand up and talk about what he allowed to happen to this country and be serious about it,” Trump said.
“But if he wasn’t given a pardon, I could see looking into that. Why don’t you take a look at it, Kristi,” Trump added, looking toward current Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Trump acknowledged that Mayorkas had been impeached, but he characterized the process as “fake.”
The GOP-led House of Representatives impeached Mayorkas in February 2024, but those charges were promptly dismissed by the then-Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
Mayorkas’ Secret Service protection was revoked by Trump in May of this year, after it had been extended for an additional six months by Biden.
