The split between Elon Musk and President Trump is official.
But Musk may have gone way over the line.
And Elon Musk declared war on Donald Trump for this bad reason.
Elon Musk officially broke with President Trump and the MAGA movement as the Senate neared passage of President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill.
The Big Beautiful Bill made the 2017 tax cuts permanent, codified campaign promises like no taxes on tips, defunded transgender surgeries through Medicaid, repealed Joe Biden’s Green New Deal, and fully funded the conduction of the border wall and mass deportations.
But the Senate version of the bill added $3.3 trillion to the debt over the next ten years.
That red ink was the red line for Musk.
Musk previously fought with Trump over the Big Beautiful Bill before apologizing for a series of personal attacks on social media.
Now, Musk could no longer hold back.
Musk attacked Republicans and Democrats for being members of the uni-party over a shared willingness to deficit spend and that America needed a new political party.
“It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS that we live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY!! Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people,” Musk wrote on X.
The Senate’s version of the Big Beautiful Bill differed from the House’s so the House Republicans would need to pass the bill again.
Musk pleaded with the House Freedom Caucus to honor their promises to cut spending and kill the bill.
“How can you call yourself the Freedom Caucus if you vote for a DEBT SLAVERY bill with the biggest debt ceiling increase in history?” Musk went on to say.
Musk, the world’s richest man and someone who spent nearly $300 million in the 2024 election to help elect President Trump, promises to defeat every Republican who voted for the Big Beautiful Bill in a primary if it were the last thing he ever did.
“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame! And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk continued.
Finally, Musk announced that if Congress passed the Big Beautiful Bill the following day, he would form the America Party, whose sole focus would be tackling the $37 trillion national debt.
“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE,” Musk concluded.
Trump fired back on Truth Social, saying the real source of Musk’s anger was the fact that Republicans rolled back Joe Biden’s electric vehicle mandate, which promised a windfall for Musk’s Tesla brand.
“Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one,” Trump began.
Trump warned that Musk’s companies received nearly $40 billion in government subsidies, money that allows Tesla and SpaceX to thrive, and that if Musk wanted to save money, those subsidies might be a good place to start.
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!” Trump concluded.
Third parties normally struggle because Republicans and Democrats control ballot access at the state level.
But Musk has unlimited resources to pour into the America Party.
And as Ross Perot showed in the 1992 and 1996 elections, a billionaire with a beef who forms their own political party can siphon enough votes from Republicans to hand Democrats victory.
