One of the bigger names in politics for Democrats in the 1960s and a mainstay in journalism for more than a decade has passed away.
Bill Moyers, who served in the Lyndon B. Johnson administration, has passed away.
He was 91 years old.
He’s gone
While there was not much detail regarding his death, Moyers’ son, William, did confirm that his father had died from complications that arose from prostate cancer.
Moyers made a big splash as the White House chief of staff for Johnson in 1964, but he moved over to a far better role for him, serving as Johnson’s press Secretary from July 1965 to February 1967.
Prior to serving insthe Johnson administration, Moyers had started a career in journalism with PBS, which he would resume once he left his post.
Moyers joined Newsday in 1967, moving the publication from a conservative narrative to a more liberal approach.
Under his leadership as publisher, the publication grew in readership and won several Pulitzer Prizes.
Ownership, even though the publication was far more successful with Moyers, was disappointed in the liberal slant, and sold to the Times-Mirror Company, which ousted Moyers as publisher after the deal was finalized.
Oddly enough, Moyers had actually outbid Times-Mirror by $10 million for the paper, but his offer was declined.
Moyers transitioned over to CBS News in 1976, serving as an editor and chief correspondent for CBS Reports until 1981.
He transitioned to a new role, serving as senior news analyst and commentator for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather from 1981 to 1986.
Moyers went out the door quite loudly, hammering the network for declining standards (Oh, if he could see them today).
The journalist made a comeback in 1995 with NBC News, but it did not last very long. All the while, Moyers continued to produce independent projects that aired on PBS stations.
Many would say that Moyers was among the last of his kind, with the ability to produce hard-hitting, honest content regardless of the side of the aisle on which he was reporting.
Honestly, going back and looking at older news reports, I am not sure the mainstream media was ever honest with the American people; we just did not have access to raw material the way we do today.
We took them at their word simply because they had all the footage. Now, more often than not, the raw footage is on X or Facebook before the news outlets can report on it, so we can readily see how much they are lying to use to push their desired narrative.
