During the 2020 Democratic Party primary, Kamala Harris was a favorite heading into the race, but her hits against Joe Biden, all but calling him a racist, backfired.
The same thing happened to Harris in 2024, as the more people saw and heard from her, the more she dropped in polling.
Well, Harris started out the new cycle as the odds-on-favorite to get her party’s nomination in 2028, but after only a handful of appearances, she is already losing support in polling.
They just don’t like her
At one point, Harris had a commanding lead in the polling, but the latest Emerson College survey had shown a significant drop in support for Harris, who is now only sitting at 13%.
If you can believe it, Pete Buttigieg has taken over as the leader, now polling at 16%.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who had been polling in single digits, is one of the biggest winners of this poll, rising up to 12%.
While the media is falling all over AOC and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, they were both lagging well behind at 7%.
I don’t see how Buttigieg could ever get enough support to win the presidency, so I am not really worried about him at this point.
Newsom and Shapiro both concern me. Newsom because he has been getting a lot of attention for pushing back against Trump, and the liberal horde is falling for his act hook, line, and sinker.
Shapiro, while only polling at 7%, is a real threat, and someone who we have to keep our eye on moving forward.
I have also stated that I believe Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) could be a dark horse candidate for the Democratic Party, and he terrifies me. If he gets his profile raised to get into this hunt, I would actually mark him as the biggest threat to defeating the GOP for the White House in 2028.
This poll shows a major shakeup in the party. Right after the election, Harris was polling at 37%, lapping the entire field several times. Newsom was in second with only 7%, and the rest of the field was at 4% or less.
While Buttigieg had the largest increase in support, I just cannot take the man seriously due to his failings as South Bend’s mayor, then as Transportation secretary.
He seemed to be missing more than he was present, and he clearly blew the recovery efforts after the Ohio train derailment.
I won’t dismiss him, because Democrats love to check off boxes, and Buttigieg does that for them, but I just don’t believe that by the time we get serious about 2028 that he will be in the picture.
