Democrats in the Arizona Senate came under fire Thursday for repeatedly attempting to block use of the term “illegal aliens.”
The Arizona Senate on Thursday discussed possible amendments to SB 1742, a budget reconciliation bill for higher education spending. State Sen. Jake Hoffman (R-Queen Creek) proposed preventing colleges from subsidizing tuition for students in the U.S. illegally.
“This is sound, common-sense policy that puts the American people first over illegal aliens,” state Sen. Hoffman explained.
Multiple Democrats repeatedly interrupted the remarks, arguing the term “undocumented” should be used instead. State Sen. Mark Finchem (R-Prescott), overseeing the room at the time, quickly shut down the objections.
“For this entire room, ‘illegal alien’ is a legal term in law. Undocumented is not,” he said.
